SJV Water discussed the Kern River on “Kern County In Depth,” a weekly feature on KGET Channel 17.
Anchor Jim Scott discussed a new effort by a group of Bakersfield folks to get water in the river more often.
The group, called “Bring Back the Kern,” started an online petition to bring awareness to the legal challenges facing water in the river and to encourage the State Water Resources Control Board to move forward on a lingering issue of “unappropriated water” on the river.
In 2010, the board decided there is water available on the Kern River, but declined to say how much or who should get that water.
Several entities applied for the water, including the City of Bakersfield, which pledged to run the water down the river through the center of town for environmental and recreational purposes, as well as to recharge groundwater.
Members of Brink Back the Kern and members of the Kern River Parkway Foundation have been appearing at State Water Board meetings during the public comment section to let board members know Bakersfield residents are eagerly anticipating a decision that includes water in the river.
KGET’s Scott discussed those issues on his program, which aired Saturday, Nov. 21. It can also be accessed on KGET’s website.
The Kern River interview begins at minute 19:02.
